The Northern Journal

Volume One: Why I Began

There is something about a Northern summer that asks us to slow down.

Maybe it's the way the light lingers long after dinner. The sound of children running barefoot through the grass. The smell of pine trees after a summer rain, or the familiar crackle of a fire as the day quietly comes to an end.

These are the moments I find myself wanting to hold onto.

Not because they're extraordinary, but because they're so beautifully ordinary.

For a long time, I believed I was searching for a slower life.

What I eventually realized was that I wasn't searching for a different life at all—I was searching for a different way of seeing the one I already had.

Motherhood changed everything.

It filled my days with beautiful chaos and responsibilities I had never imagined. Somewhere between laundry piles, nap schedules, unfinished home projects, and caring for two little girls, I slowly lost touch with the parts of myself that found joy in creating beauty.

When we moved back to Wisconsin and began renovating our home, I hoped life would somehow become simpler once everything was finished.

Instead, I learned something unexpected.

Home isn't something you complete.

It's something you cultivate.

Season by season.

Meal by meal.

Tradition by tradition.

One ordinary day at a time.

That realization became the beginning of Nelson's Northern Living.

Not as a place to chase perfection, but as a place to celebrate the beauty that already exists around us.

The forest outside our favorite cabin.

Sticky marshmallows over a summer fire.

Tiny dresses wrinkled from a day spent exploring.

A quiet morning by the lake before everyone else wakes.

The laughter between sisters.

These are the moments that become the stories our children carry with them.

My hope for The Northern Journal is simple.

I hope these pages become a place where you can pause for a few moments, take a deep breath, and find inspiration to notice the season you're living in.

Some entries will share practical ideas for creating a more intentional home.

Others will explore gardening, motherhood, family traditions, or thoughtful products that have found a place in our lives.

But more than anything, I hope this journal reminds us that a meaningful life isn't built through grand accomplishments.

It's built through quiet mornings.

Shared meals.

Open windows.

Campfires.

Fresh flowers.

Hands held tightly.

And choosing, again and again, to notice the beauty of ordinary days.

Thank you for being here at the very beginning.

I'm so grateful you've found your way to this little corner of the North.

Rooted in the North,

Katie
