The First Corner We Made Ours

When we first moved into this house, almost everything felt temporary.

Boxes filled the corners.

Projects stretched from one room into the next. There were more plans than finished spaces.

Some days it felt hard to picture the home we knew this place could become.

But before a single room truly came together, there was one place I knew I wanted to create.

A place to read.

Not because it would look beautiful.

Because I hoped it would become part of our family's rhythm.

At the top of the stairs, we tucked an oversized chair beneath the sloped ceiling.

A basket of books.

A little stool for tiny hands.

Favorite stories within reach.

A bear waiting patiently for bedtime.

Nothing elaborate.

Just enough to say...

"Let's meet here tonight."

Just enough to invite us to slow down.

It has become the heart of our evenings.

Every night, we climb the stairs together.

Some nights it's me.

Some nights it's my husband.

Our oldest knows exactly where we're going before we even ask.

She climbs into the chair, gathers a stack of books, and somehow there's always room for one more story.

Sometimes two.

Sometimes five.

One more cuddle.

One more page.

Tiny feet.

Favorite blankets.

Before our youngest daughter was even born, I would sit there reading to her big sister with one hand resting on my growing belly.

Back then, I imagined the day there would be two little girls listening beside me.

Now, that day has arrived.

There are projects waiting downstairs.

Rooms we're still dreaming about.

Plans taped to walls.

Materials stacked where furniture will someday live.

But every night, upstairs, life already feels complete.

I've started to realize that home isn't built in the moments everything is finished.

It's built in the traditions we choose before it is.

This little reading corner reminds me that we don't have to wait for the perfect house to begin creating beautiful memories.

Sometimes home begins with one chair.

A stack of well-loved books.

And the decision to show up, every single evening.

One day these girls will outgrow this chair.

They'll read on their own.

Their bedtime routines will change.

They may not remember every story we read, but I hope they remember how it felt to be here.

Safe.

Together.

Always welcomed into one more chapter.

Because I think that's what home is really made of.

Our Evening Reading Rhythm

Every evening before bed...

  • We gather in the chair.

  • Everyone picks one book.

  • We dim the lights.

  • We read until someone starts yawning.

Collected with Care: Our comfy chair and the favorites from our little library are here.
